SUMMARY:ULTRA X JORDAN - Ultra Marathon October 2021
DESCRIPTION:Ultra X Jordan (previously the Wadi Rum Ultra) takes place in the land of Lawrence of Arabia. The mystical desert course takes competitors past historic sites\, into dramatic wadis and over magnificent sand dunes. \nWadi Rum’s nickname is “The Valley of the Moon” and participants will quickly see why. Its landscape\, characterised by unique towering rock formations\, is truly mind-blowing\, as is the challenge. As locations go\, this place is unrivalled in its beauty. \nWe are dreaming of the desert! \nDid you know that Ultra X Jordan was our first event? From 2016 to 2018 it was called the Wadi Rum Ultra. In 2017\, Sam and Jamie (the co-founders) met\, Sam was running and Jamie was the Race Director! The two got on and the rest is history! \nHere is why we think you should be joining us this October: \n1) The Course \nOur race course\, which changes slightly each year will take participants on a grand tour of Wadi Rum’s protected region. You’ll pass through canyons\, dried up riverbeds and occasionally over big sand dunes. \n2) The History \nThe desert is steeped in history. Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British Army officer T. E. Lawrence aka Lawrence of Arabia\, who passed through several times during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. \nIf Wadi Rum isn’t enough for you\, the opportunity to visit the Lost City of Petra on the Saturday after the race certainly will be. \nPetra will take your breath away. The area is thought to have been inhabited from as early as 7000 BC and was once a major regional trading hub used by the Nabataean people. For the film buffs among you\, it’s fame was amplified in Indiana Jones\, The Last Crusade \n  \n\n\n\n\nMEDAL RIBBONS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll finishers will receive a race medal. Different medal ribbons will be awarded based upon the finishing times outlined below. \nAs part of our Sustainability Policy\, the Green Ribbon will be awarded to the competitor that displays the highest commitment to reducing their environmental impact both in preparation for and during the race (as determined by the organisers). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBLACK RIBBON\n\nUnder 27 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHITE RIBBON\n\nUnder 30 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBLUE RIBBON\n\nOver 30 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nINCLUDED:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1. The Cederberg Mountains\, burnt orange by iron oxide\, dominate the landscape. Jagged sandstone rock formations\, like the Maltese Cross and the Wolfberg Arch\, and ancient San and Khoi rock art\, make this area truly spectacular. \nThe Cederberg lies 250km north of Cape Town\, stretching from the Middelberg Pass in Citrusdal to north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam. The wilderness encompasses about 71 000 hectares of rugged\, mountainous terrain\, making it a top spot in the Western Cape for hiking and rock-climbing enthusiasts. \nThe Cederberg\, which forms part of the Cape floral Region\, is a World Heritage Site\, is covered in mountain fynbos\, including the laurel protea\, the red disa\, rooibos\, and the rare and endemic snow protea. Rare Clanwilliam cedars\, the area’s namesake\, dot the higher mountain cliffs. \nThe area is also rich in wildlife. Visitors with a keen eye may spot porcupines\, honey badger\, the Cape clawless otter and aardvark. The lucky few may even catch a glimpse of the elusive leopard. There are also smaller predators like the African wild cat\, lynx\, bat-eared fox\, aardwolf and Cape fox. Other\, more common animals include baboons\, dassies\, grey rhebok\, klipspringers\, duiker and grysbok. \nTo find out more\, download the Cederberg Wilderness brochure. \nAlgeria\nFrom Cape Town: Take the N7 highway. Stay on the N7 past Citrusdal\, after 28km take the Cederberg/Algeria turn-off to the right. Follow this main gravel road for 17km you will see the office complex and accommodation and campsite access road on your left. This is a 250km drive\, which should take about three hours. \n \n

Both Old Trafford and Trafford Bar stops are less than a 10-minute walk from the Athletes Village\, Race Village and Start Area. View the Metrolink network map here. \nIf you’re staying for the weekend\, adult Travelcards are available for only £6.20 for travel from 6.00 pm Friday to end-of-service on Sunday evening. Please refer to the drop off information below. \nAirport \nManchester International Airport is approximately 20 minutes from the area. By car\, join the M56 motorway at the airport exit (junction 5) and then follow the directions ‘From The South’ shown above.\nThere are direct train services to Manchester City Centre and a Metrolink Service that runs to the Trafford Bar stop. This Metrolink service takes approximately 40 minutes\, and Trafford Bar is a 10-minute walk from the Athletes Village\, Race Village and Start Area. \nGetting Around \nIf you are using public transport\, we strongly recommend using Metrolink to get to and from the race village. \nParking \nManchester United FC has many exceptionally convenient and secure car parking spaces available next to the race start. Naturally the rapids here are more ferocious and also more frequent. \nAbout 2:00 or 3:00 PM In the afternoon we will drive down to Chitwan.  After checking in to the hotel\,there will be a briefing on the activities we will be engaging in during our stay here.  We will then walk on the banks of the Rapti River to enjoy the sunset in the sub-tropical jungles of Chitwan\, followed by evening dinner with a brief cultural program showcasing the tribal dances unique to this region of Nepal. \nFriday 12th November 2021\nEarly in the morning\, we will be mounted on elephants for a jungle safari through dense grasslands to witness wildlife in its natural habitat. After breakfast\, we visit the elephant stables and even enjoy bathing the elephants. During the afternoon we can drive through the jungles followed by a canoe ride down the Rapti River. While canoeing\, we may get a close look at the Gharial and Mugger crocodiles along with fresh water dolphins\, otters and varieties of water birds. We may even go bird watching or go on a nature walks\, maybe see rhino\, sloth bears\, tiger or python. There is a beautiful variety of wild flora and fauna found in the park.  Overnight in Chitwan. \nSaturday 13th November 2021 \nEarly in the morning\, we spend our time bird-watching as Chitwan National Park is also home to a large variety of resident and migratory birds. We then have breakfast and drive towards the beautiful lake city Pokhara.\n\nSunday 14th November 2021\nToday is a day for you to explore one of the many things available.  Pokhara is a great place for Mountain bike hire or there are lots of places to visit. \nThe Phewa Lake\, the second largest lake in Nepal\, adds to the enthralling beauty of Pokhara. The changing light of the sun on the Phewa Lake provides aesthetic calmness to the lovers of nature. On the eastern side of the lake\, visitors can find a cluster of restaurants and pubs. Along with these attractions\, boating\, sailing\, kayaking\, canoeing\, swimming\, bird watching\, fishing and angling are some of the activities which you can participate in at Phewa Lake. In the midst of the lake stands the Varahi Temple\, where animal and bird sacrifices are offered to the goddess Varahi by Hindu worshippers every Saturday. \nDavid’s Fall is a charming little waterfall located about 2 km southwest of the Pokhara Airport on the Siddhartha Highway. Also located very close to David’s Fall is GupteswarGupha\, a mysteriously sacred cave that holds special value for Hindus since a phallic symbol of Lord Shiva is perfectly preserved here in the condition it was discovered in. Locally\, it is also named as GupteswarMahadev. \nBindybasini Temple is the oldest religious shrine in Pokhara built in the 16th century. The main shrine of the temple is dedicated to the Goddess Durga where Hindu worshippers flock to perform sacrifices\, especially on Saturday. \nSetiGandaki Gorge\, a wonder of nature that goes underground\, vanishing from sight in many places along its route through the city. At various points the river is barely two meters wide and cuts a deep\, narrow valley. . A good spot for watching the river below is MahendraPul\, a small bridge at the center of the city. \nWorld Peace Pagoda\, a massive Buddhist stupa\, is an impressive site in Pokhara situated on top of a hill on the southern shore of Phewa Lake. Besides being an impressive sight in itself\, the Buddhist shrine is a great vantage point which offers spectacular views of the Annapurna range and Pokhara City.\n\nMonday 15th November 2021\nWe fly back to Kathmandu today. It is a steep climb up through a much drier forest before reaching Hinku Cave. From here we can see the trail drop closer to the river before climbing again to Deurali\, the most scenic stretch of the day. The vegetation is sparser\, allowing magical views of the valley\, the river below\, and the sheer rock-face cliffs above with bands of wispy waterfalls. Overnight in Deurali.\n \nSunday 14th November 2021\nDeurali to Annapurna Base Camp (4\,130m/13\,545ft) via Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3700m/12135ft): 5- 6 hours \nClimb gently through a river bed then over a steep trail over to the mountain side. Hiunchuli\, Annapurna South\, Annapurna I\, Annapurna III\, Gandharvachuli and Gangapurna which is certainly a rewarding experience. The vegetation disappears and the path widens as we enter the Annapurna sanctuary. From here\, we get sensational views of the near-vertical south face of Annapurna towering above us. The sanctuary boasts of a dynamic view without anything impeding the 360-degree panorama. From base camp we again get to savor mesmerizing views of the Machhapuchhre\, Annapurna South \, Annapurna I\, Hiunchuli and other peaks. Overnight at Annapurna Base Camp. \nMonday 15th November 2021\nAnnapurna Base Camp to Bamboo: 7 – 8 hours\nFrom the Annapurna base camp we retrace our steps to Bamboo.
