The 66811 ha of mountainous terrain is located in the Cape Floral Region only three hours outside Cape Town\, but it feels like a different world. The Cederberg Mountains\, burnt orange by iron oxide\, dominate the landscape. Jagged sandstone rock formations\, like the Maltese Cross and the Wolfberg Arch\, and ancient San and Khoi rock art\, make this area truly spectacular. \nThe Cederberg lies 250km north of Cape Town\, stretching from the Middelberg Pass in Citrusdal to north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam. The wilderness encompasses about 71 000 hectares of rugged\, mountainous terrain\, making it a top spot in the Western Cape for hiking and rock-climbing enthusiasts. \nThe Cederberg\, which forms part of the Cape floral Region\, is a World Heritage Site\, is covered in mountain fynbos\, including the laurel protea\, the red disa\, rooibos\, and the rare and endemic snow protea. Rare Clanwilliam cedars\, the area’s namesake\, dot the higher mountain cliffs. \nThe area is also rich in wildlife. Visitors with a keen eye may spot porcupines\, honey badger\, the Cape clawless otter and aardvark. The lucky few may even catch a glimpse of the elusive leopard. There are also smaller predators like the African wild cat\, lynx\, bat-eared fox\, aardwolf and Cape fox. Other\, more common animals include baboons\, dassies\, grey rhebok\, klipspringers\, duiker and grysbok. \nTo find out more\, download the Cederberg Wilderness brochure. \nAlgeria\nFrom Cape Town: Take the N7 highway. Stay on the N7 past Citrusdal\, after 28km take the Cederberg/Algeria turn-off to the right. Follow this main gravel road for 17km you will see the office complex and accommodation and campsite access road on your left. This is a 250km drive\, which should take about three hours. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Big Five Marathon
DESCRIPTION:The wildest of them all\nThe Big Five Marathon is an exclusive event that combines a challenging marathon experience with a classic African safari vacation.\nThe Big Five Marathon in South Africa is held among the wildlife of the African savannah. Runners from all over the world will meet in one of the most spectacular Big Five game reserves in Africa. \nIn these magnificent surroundings\, we combine exciting game drives with a challenging marathon route going right through the habitat of the most famous African game: Elephant\, Rhino\, Buffalo\, Lion and Leopard. \nNo fences\, no rivers\, nothing at all separates the runners from the African wildlife! \n \nRace Info\nThe Big Five Marathon features a classic 42.195km marathon and a half marathon. The distances are colour coded – marathon is black and half marathon is red. Marathon and half marathon – Minimum 18 years old on race day. \n\nRoute description\n\nThe Big Five Marathon is known for its challenging course\, which takes runners through incredible scenery and showcases the natural beauty and wildlife of South Africa. \nThe start and finish line are situated at Lakeside Lodge on the upper escarpment. After the start\, the marathon and half marathon routes take the runners past Ravineside Lodge\, the Entabeni Monolith and further on to the lower plateau. This first section is run on dirt roads made up of red sand. Runners will pass a few hills (nothing too bad…the most challenging is yet to come!). And when you reach Hanglip View Point\, you backtrack and run back before you reach Yellow Wood Valley. Pay attention to this section as the surface is very uneven with loose rocks\, pebbles and holes. \nThe Yellow Wood Valley is the most dreaded part of the course. You are about to run down the steepest slope of your life! This sharp descent is on a paved surface. The next three kilometres or so will be excruciatingly hard on your quads as you negotiate the steep slope. You reach lion country after the descent. And\, although the next nine kilometres are flat\, you’re running through deep sand. Full marathoners do a 9km loop\, whereas half marathon runners run a 2km loop. \n\n \n  \n\nThis brings us back to Yellow Wood. And yes\, you guessed correctly – we’re going up the dreaded hill this time! Be prepared to take things slowly as it’s virtually impossible to run up this hill. \nThe route carries on to Long Drive\, a narrow valley\, where marathon runners do a 6km loop. Half marathoners run across the valley and reach the final section of the route. This section is run on dirt trails\, a welcome respite from the deep sand and loose stone terrain earlier on. \nThe end of the run is fairly hard (final four kilometres). We run halfway down the ridge\, which provides us with a wonderful view out over the plateau’s lake. The surface is fairly bad\, consisting of hard uneven stony ground with plenty of large rocks and stones of all sizes. This final part has quite a few hills and as the surface is loose\, it pays to keep a careful watch on the ground as we run towards the finish. With the finish line in sight you can now take it nice and easy. \nThe weather is very dry\, sunny and cool at this time of the year. Participants can expect an average temperature of around 15-20 Celsius\, but with variations due to sun\, shade\, wind and altitude. \n\nMore exciting information and Registration : https://big-five-marathon.com/

SUMMARY:The Maritzburg City Marathon 2019
DESCRIPTION:Maritzburg City Marathon\nThe 2019 ‘Maritzburg City Marathon takes place at 5:00am on Sunday 24th February 2019. \nThis race has become the most popular marathon and half marathon combination in KwaZulu-Natal. The race not only has generously achievable cut off times (four hours for 21\,1 km and seven hours for the marathon) but caters equally for runners and walkers. This is an ideal entry level Marathon\, Half Marathon or 10km. \nThe basket of races also includes a 10km race beginning at 9.30am. This is open to runners and walkers and has a generous 2 hour 30 minute limit. \nTo give you something different\, we have added two trail runs. Lynton Kynloch has designed a trail course along the banks of the Umsinduzi River. The trail will offer a 7 km option as well as a 16 km distance. These events will be run on Saturday morning\, 23rd February. \nTHE MARATHON OF CHOICE \nTraditionally\, more Comrades entrants used this race as their qualifier than any other race. Comrades Marathon Qualifying time is 4 hours 50 minutes. The 42.2km is also a Two Oceans Marathon (5 hours) qualifier. \nIn our continuing efforts to improve this event\, the organisers have The Witness as a Media Partner\, and Thirsti handling logistics. We have also engaged the assistance of other role players to assist us in improving sponsorships and activities. With their assistance we are growing the event to include the FUN RUNS along with the usual fare and upgraded entertainment. \nKeep an eye on this web site\, our FaceBook page and the media for the arrival of each piece of good news. \nA whole weekend of running and entertainment festivities. \nBy kind support of LIBERTY MIDLANDS MALL\, EL SOMBRERO SPUR and PINKDRIVE\, we are\, again\, providing a KIDZONE for both Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February. Here\, your family will be safely entertained whilst you run or enjoy the registration and races. No more excuses! No more feeling left out. No more running on your own in different races. Now both Mum and Dad can enjoy and achieve together and the kids will be there to share your day. \nWhere we lead\, others follow. \nThis is the twenty third running of this event.
