It is recommended that you ‘walk through’ & familiarise yourself with the routes to/from your bike from/to the entrances and exits of transition prior to starting the race. Remember to leave your bike in a low enough gear\, ready for the cycle section. There is no cycling in transition: mount/dismount your bike at the mount/dismount points. You will be required to verify your identification i.e. race number\, with those on the gate. No one other than competitors or race officials will be permitted into the transition area at any time. \nIt is your responsibility to ensure that your bike is in safe road-worthy condition\, before entering transition. Any bike that is considered unsafe or hazardous to the rider or other competitors will not be allowed into transition. All handlebar ends must be plugged. Remember to check there are no punctures or flats the day before the race and before leaving for the event and ensure your helmet is securely fitting. \nRace Briefing\nYou must be changed and ready for your swim race briefing in front of transition at the specified time. You will have a separate briefing by the Swim Director on poolside. \nTransition Area\nThe transition area is located to the rear of the swimming pool in the car park (this will be closed for oncoming cars). \nNB: There will be a dry and warm transition area for clothing weather dependent. \nSwim Section\nAccording to British Triathlon rules the pool must be tested regularly for water quality. The final test will be done prior to the event and results will be posted up at registration. In the unfortunate event of chlorine levels being above the appropriate limit for safe swimming in this section of the event this discipline will be abandoned in favour of a duathlon. We regret that in this case no refunds can be offered. Historically all previous water tests have been well below these limits. \nThe temperature of the pool will be taken one hour before the event and will also be posted up at registration. If the temperature of the pool exceeds the appropriate level then the distances will be reduced. \nBike Course (1 Lap)\nThe bike course is a total of 12.2 miles (20.3K) following an undulating route leaving the swimming pool taking a right hand turn onto Dog Row and then joining the Quay. This is when a competitor gains an advantage by cycling in the slip-stream of the cyclist in front. Competitors should ride a minimum of 10m behind the cyclist in front\, except when overtaking. If overtaking is not completed within 15 seconds the overtaking cyclist must drop back. Static marshals will check that all competitors comply with the drafting rule. \nIn order to monitor drafting our bike director will tour the bike route in an estate car. You should place this bottle in the labelled box in transition when you rack your bike. A marshal will transport the box of bottles to the refreshments station ready for your bike section. This bottle should be easily recognisable. Please note we cannot guarantee the safety or security of your bottle. Your empties will be taken back to transition for collection at the end of your race. \nRefreshments station 2: At the Finish. Medical supplies will be available here too. \nCut-off Times\nAs it is our intention to encourage all participants to complete their challenge there are no enforced cut off times for the event. Judgment calls include\, but are not limited to: drafting\, dangerous riding and unsporting conduct. \nAppeals must be made in writing to the race official. The time for a competitor or official team representative to file an appeal is no later than 15 minutes after his or her finishing time or the posting of the infraction\, whichever is the later; however\, the intention to write an appeal has to be announced within five minutes of his or her finishing time or posting of infraction. After this deadline only announced protest will be admitted. SUMMARY:Blade Runner Ultra Marathon Series Trail Run
DESCRIPTION:Ultra Marathon Series Trail Run\nThe Blade Runner Ultra Marathon is a 50km fully way-marked race set in the SAS Selection heartlands of the Brecon Beacon mountains. Staged in the deep winter and high summer months\, each edition of the race will visit iconic landmarks steeped in SAS folklore and following in the footsteps of a history of young men in search of something out of the ordinary. Forged on memories and nostalgia for our past endeavours and struggles as we pitted ourselves against one of the world’s great endurance challenges\, we could think of no finer culmination than to stage the finish at the iconic old red phone box via Pen y Fan summit\, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons range\, the outline of which is engraved onto the heart of every SAS man.For our DS team it was always far more than a challenge or test\, it was a pilgrimage and the adventure of a life time and we’re honoured and humbled to be able to share a small part of our past with those who take on the Blade Runner Ultra marathon challenge. \nAll runners who complete the course by passing through each RV point and making time cuts will be presented with a special cloth patch by one of our former SAS staff at the finish line. Category champion prizes will be provided by Paramo and our other sponsors as well as a framed route map featuring original SAS insignia. \nCATEGORIES\nThe Blade Runner Ultra Series will be a Clean Fatigue category only with no Load Bearing element. There will be Men’s and Ladies fields in the following age categories. \nROUTE INFORMATION & RV PROTOCOL\nThe Bladerunner route follows a sequence of forestry trails\, hill paths and old Roman roads\, negotiating 2200m of elevation gain over the 50 km course. Along the route you will pass through a series of DS manned rendezvous points where you will be required to log in to have your name and race number recorded and your suitability to continue assessed. RV points will be stocked with hot food and drinks\, with robust medical support and off-road vehicle rescue support. Owed to the very real risk of adverse weather conditions and the requirement to cover ground in darkness for at least two hours during the winter edition\, the opening part of the course will be illuminated with military grade cyalumes to provide enhanced route marking. \nThe Blade Runner route map is available for download and print on this page along with GPX files for your GPS device. \nBLADE RUNNER ULTRA START & FINISH\nThe de-serviced old red phone box has marked the start and finish points of the Fan Dance for nearly sixty years of SAS Selection. It has now become an iconic landmark steeped in the finest history and tradition of our Special Forces. The Blade Runner ultra-marathon will also launch from the very same location and be a welcome site at the end of the race. \nTHE BATTLE FOR JACOB’S LADDER\nThe legendary climb up Jacob’s Ladder is synonymous with SAS Selection and can be especially challenging to negotiate when covered in snow and ice. The rocky and step like upper reaches of this southern face of Pen y Fan is steep enough to require hand and foot placements to reach the summit. Jacob’s Ladder will be one of the most well-known and famous segments of the Blade Runner course\, rivalled by a number of other equally fearsome climbs you will have to negotiate. \nNIGHT RUNNING\nThe early part of the Winter Edition Blade Runner course will be run in darkness so head troches will be required. Head torches will be required unless the moon state is high with clear skies. Past editions of our Fan Dance night trail run have been blessed with strong ambient light conditions\, increased further by the snow on the ground so there’s always a chance absorbing the spectacular scenery by moonlight. \nBLADE RUNNER LEAGUE TABLES\nBlade Runner will have a league table for each category recording every edition of the race\, ranking each historical finisher in order of their finish time. The Fan Dance Race has a competitive Clean Fatigue/trail run race league table of its own which can be viewed to assess the competition: League Tables \nGENERAL EVENT INFORMATION \nBASE CAMP\nThe Storey Arms Outdoor centre will function as the event Base Camp\, administration area and Command Centre.
