Heasley swims year-round with Hillsboro HEAT Swim Team and owns 12 Winter Juniors (or faster) cuts, six of which are also U.S. Open standards. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American took seventh in the 500 free and 13th in the 400 IM at Juniors West last month and achieved 100% lifetime bests at Phillips 66 Nationals this past summer. As a member of the USA National Junior team, Heasley earned the bronze medal in the 400m free at the 2018 Junior Pan Pac Championships where he also competed in four other events. He told Swimming World: “I am extraordinarily excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue both my academic and athletic career at the University of Texas! I chose Texas because of the phenomenal team atmosphere and reputation, the fantastic facilities, and the high level academics. I would like to thank my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me through this whole process. Hook ’em!” His best times include: 200 free – 1:38.18 500 free – 4:19.82 1650 free – 15:06.12 200 back – 1:47.56 200 breast – 2:02.82 200 fly – 1:45.93 200 IM – 1:47.86 400 IM – 3:45.56 Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before arriving in Austin, Heasley will make an immediate impact. The emerging economic and tourism hub of Roxas City in the province of Capiz is all set to host hundreds of triathletes from around the country as the Capiz TriAksyon leg of the 2019 National Age-Group Triathlon (NAGT) season fires off April 13 and 14. The event has a Standard Distance (1.5km swim – 40km bike – 10km run) course for the seasoned triathletes as well as relay participants. There is also a Sprint Distance (750m swim – 20km bike – 5km run) course for those who want a lighter challenge and for Junior Elite participants. At the same time there will be Super TriKids (STK) contests for youths aged 6-below (50m swim – 300m bike – 100m run), 7-8 years-old (50m swim – 500m bike – 200mM run), 9-10 years-old (100m swim – 1km bike – 500m run) and 11-12 years-old (150m swim – 2km bike – 1km run). Participants aged 13-15 will engage in a Super Sprint race of 400m swim – 14km bike and 3km run. The young rider from Michigan sprinted to the holeshot and sat in second behind Nick Carter before sliding out on the final time on the treacherous Bonk Breaker hill, and sliding down to the fifth spot. Those dreams were once again derailed last year heading into the 2018 V1 Nationals in Reno due to a dislocated shoulder. Young athletes only get two years to race the Junior category, so missing one Cyclocross Nationals can be a tough pill to swallow. Now at racing age 18, he was more than ready to take advantage of the chance to go for the win in Louisville. KOTA KINABALU: Sabah track cyclist, 16-year-old Waldron Chee, made history by winning a bronze medal in Individual Pursuit at the Asian Cycling Championship (ACC) held in Jakarta International Velodrome from January 9-13. He is the first Sabahan to win a medal at Asia’s most prestigious cycling competition against top junior cyclists from Asian powerhouses such as Japan, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and India. In the 3000m individual pursuit qualifying round, Waldron clocked 3:30.427 to finish third, missing the second spot by mere 0.15 seconds. He was unlucky to have to overtake a slow qualifier, costing him a spot in the gold medal race. However, in the bronze medal decider against Japan’s Hiroto Shinomiya, Waldron blasted to a four-second lead after eight laps and never looked back. Waldron, who is no stranger to success, having won two gold medals at the 2017 Sabah Games (Saga), and two bronze medals at the 2018 Malaysia Games (Sukma), was called into the national team seven weeks ago to prepare for ACC, his first international race. Newly appointed MSN director, Mohd Asneh Mohd Noor, was elated with the historical feat. “Sabah is proud to contribute to Malaysia’s medal tally at ACC. With further development of cycling, Sabah will be a new force in Malaysian cycling. I hope this is the first of many successes for our track cycling team,” he said. Waldron’s performance and composure also received high praise from the national head coach, John Beasley. “I love how he races and handles himself. He will be going places, that I am sure. Not only could they watch one of their own racing at a high level, they also picked up rules and race formats of track cycling. Without a velodrome here, track cycling is foreign to most Sabahans, and Sabah track cycling coach, Louis Pang had to answer a fan’s question on how Sabah managed to produce track cyclists despite the lack of facilities. “For our elite track cyclists, we are working on a special programme to address this performance gap so they are provided the opportunity to improve even further. The physical demands of our sport are obvious. You don’t need to be a cyclist to understand the rigours of racing up a mountain. Even the most casual observer can appreciate the fitness required to race for hours on end, day after day. Far less obvious are the psychological demands of the sport. Self-belief, motivation, positive direction — lack these and your performance will suffer as much as if you’re in poor physical shape. The best power numbers in the world mean nothing without the right mindset to put them to use. Jaime Gunning (Specialized Women’s Racing) knows this all too well. Over the past 12 months she’s seen the difference a healthy headspace can make: how having others believe in you can prompt you to believe in yourself and the impact that can have on your racing.
